Margherita & Francesca Padovani

Twin sisters Margherita and Francesca Padovani are the driving force behind the Societa Agricola Fonterenza. Based just outside the town of Montalcino in the heart of Tuscany, these powerful women are growing and crafting some of the most exciting wines from the area. Originally from Milan, but having grown up visiting the Montalcino area as children, they decided to commit themselves to their land in 1999, planting their first vines, and starting to farm organically immediately. The switch to biodynamic farming came shortly after, and their dedication continues today. Their wines come from three main plots, two focused on the Sangiovese Grosso clone of Montalcino, and one focused on white grapes indigenous to Tuscany and the surrounding regions. The warmth of their personality shows through in their wines, they are inviting, but energetic, and with an edge which reflects the strength these two have in making their own path in a region full of very average and uninspiring wines.

Located in southern Tuscany, the climate here is warm with dry summers and mild, wet winters. The combination of coastal breezes and varying altitudes creates an ideal microclimate for slow ripening, producing concentrated and complex Sangiovese grapes.

The soils of Montalcino are diverse, with a mixture of Galestro (a rocky, schistous clay), Alberese (limestone), and volcanic soils. These variations in soil contribute to different styles of Brunello, with the Galestro providing minerality and fine tannins, while the Alberese contributes to the wine's structure and longevity. The volcanic soils add a unique richness and intensity, enhancing the depth of flavors in the wines

The vines of the Padovani sisters varies in age, but the original plantings were made in 1999, so about 25-30 years old. The sisters were convinced to work organically from the start, and have shifted to biodynamic practices. The winemaking is equally hands-off, relying on indigenous yeasts and avoiding chemical inputs. The sisters focus on producing wines that reflect the character of their land, with the goal of expressing the full potential of Montalcino’s terroir. In the cellar the wine making is gentle and instead of focusing on power and extraction, the focus is on fruit and ripe tannin.
