Maher Harb

Sept is the French word for the number seven, and it carries a spiritual significance for winemaker Maher Harb. Maher’s life is intimately intertwined with the fortunes of his native Lebanon. Losing a father at a young age to war, and eventually moving a way to France to seek a new life, but at some point feeling lost, and seeking purpose, returned to the land of his father. He now makes wine, continuing a tradition which has been alive in the region for thousands of years. He works with old vine, native varieties such as well a few International varieties. His terroir is mountain terroir, and the wines reflect the warmth of the country, but also the salty sea influence. He is one of the first in Lebanon to use biodynamic principles for his farming and is very proud to return back to these simple ideas to bring back life to the vineyards.

The wines of Sept are characterized by the high altitude of the mountains of Lebanon, and the proximity to the coast with its cooling breeze. This proximity helps moderate the climate, giving the wines a certain saline quality, particularly in the white wines.

The vineyards are managed biodynamically and organically, making it Lebanon’s first biodynamic estate. The vines are cultivated by hand, and the estate emphasizes working in harmony with nature, using natural treatments and following lunar cycles. Some of the vines, like Merweh and Obeideh, are from ancient Lebanese vineyards that survived phylloxera.

The winemaking is only natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts and minimal sulfur, ensuring the wines reflect the authenticity of their terroir.
