Despite being an "international" variety, which is native to France, Merlot has been present in the Kras/Carso regions of Slovenia and Italy for a long time. It expresses itself quite differently than in France or other regions. The limestone bedrock of Kras helps the wine maintain a vertical and fresh feeling.

Wines that stand the test of time are usually wines worth drinking! The wine is still incredibly vibrant after more than 10 years of aging, with fresh and crisp acidity, but remaining balanced and softened a bit with time. The mouthfeel is smooth, but still very lively.

The palate has a delicious mix of riper and fresh fruit flavours as well as some more developed and tertiary aromas, making this a wonderful wine to sit and drink over the course of an evening. Even better with a plate of food in front of you.

Derenda

After a long career as a computer engineer at IBM, Darko Derenda chose a very different path. Together with his wife Beti, he moved to the quiet village of Štanjel in Slovenia’s Karst region, where they began a new chapter as winemakers. Their vineyards are trained using the traditional Rozge method, naturally limiting yields and producing wines of deep concentration. Darko’s philosophy is defined by Tim. He insists on extended aging, often waiting six to seven years before releasing a bottle. His wines are a true reflection of this thoughtful approach: balanced, powerful, and shaped by the rhythms of nature rather than the pressures of the market.
